The ABCs of Choosing Childcare

Making the decision on your childcare provider is an important one. Several key areas should be considered to be sure your child receives the best possible care.

A.    Referral and Consumer Education

Referral specialists at Child Care Referral Central will listen to your family’s child care preferences, conduct a custom search for you, and provide details about the child care programs that meet your unique needs.

Child Care Referral Central offers three, free and convenient ways to obtain referrals to child care programs in your area:

Search online at www.childcareservices.org

Call toll-free at 855-EARLY-ED (855-327-5933) to speak with a child care referral counselor. Spanish-speaking counselors are available!

E-mail referral@childcareservices.org to request that a child care referral counselor contact you.

B.    Childcare Checklist:

To be sure you consider all of the critical items for your child’s care, whether in a family child care home or in a child care center, here is the checklist recommended by the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) to assist in your choice:

C.    North Carolina’s Five Star Rating

North Carolina uses a rating system to allow child care programs to be recognized for the higher quality care provided. Programs are awarded one to five stars based on:

  • Staff Education

  • Program Standards

One star means a program meets minimum licensing requirements. Two to five stars mean a program has voluntarily met progressively higher standards in staff education and program quality.

D.   Research on Provider

As a parent or caregiver, you want to be sure the care provider you are considering is in good standing with the state regulations for your child’s safety.

To research a child care provider’s license information and sanitation ratings and compliance history at the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education, click here.

Should a complaint need to be filed regarding a facility, that may be done here.

Little Free Libraries

In 2018, a community collaboration was formed to address a problem in Caswell County: Many children and families had few, or no, age appropriate books in their homes. The group came together to provide children and families with access to books by building and placing Little Free Libraries throughout Caswell County.

Especially in rural neighborhoods, or those with transportation barriers, Little Free Libraries can be valuable assets that provide residents easy access to books 24/7.

Current Locations in Caswell:

  • Anderson — 3 Points

  • Casville — Casville Fire Department

  • Cherry Grove — Pagetown Curb Market

  • Leasburg — Leasburg Grocery

  • Pelham — Sam’s #2/Convenience Center

  • Prospect Hill — Triangle Grocery (3 Points)

  • Providence — 86 Mart/Convenience Center
