Foster a love of reading

Raising A Reader's mission is to engage caregivers in a routine of book sharing with their children to foster healthy brain development, healthy relationships, a love of reading, and the literacy skills critical for school success.

The research is clear—when families are involved, children’s academic achievement improves.

Raising A Reader is a national, evidence informed, early literacy program designed to serve young children, from birth–Kindergarten, in environments where poverty, language barriers, limited formal education for parents, and other challenges exist that can limit regular book sharing.  Through this program, children receive a Red Book Bag each week filled with high quality, culturally responsive books to take home, providing children and families access to over 100 books during the school year. Book rotation is supplemented with parent engagement activities that enhance shared reading routines and interactive book sharing/read aloud skills. The program encourages families to connect with their public and school libraries.  In addition, the program is aligned to early childhood curriculum and standards and books can be used for read alouds and classroom assignments.
