Upcoming “Parents Matter” Program
_ Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 pm
February 21, 28 March
6, 13, 20
Location: Rainbow Educational Child Care Center - 527 Fire Tower Road,Yanceyville
The Parents Matter! Program (PMP) encourages parents to talk to their children about adolescent health issues. Parents have the power to positively shape their children’s health behaviors, but their voices often compete with messages sent by the media, peers, and society. This program, designed for parents and guardians of pre-teens and teenagers, helps parents improve their skills and increase their comfort level when talking to their children about pregnancy prevention, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and HIV/AIDS. The PMP provides opportunities for parents to build positive parenting skills, improve parent-child communication, and strengthen relationships with their children.
The PMP is presented in five weekly sessions (lasting 2 hours per session) to groups of 12-15 participants. All sessions are free. Child care and dinner will be provided at no cost to registered participants and children. Parents/Guardians that participate in the program will receive an incentive award.
Completed registration forms must be received by 5:00 pm on February 14, 2012

Kindergarten!
As a parent, you are the greatest influence in your child’s life. Your interest and help in preparing your child for kindergarten, a significant milestone in their life, may help your child’s success.
Preparing to go to kindergarten should begin a full year before the actual start of school.
This list covers five steps to take in preparing:
1 Visit the school!
2 Ask for a school calendar so you can familiarize yourself and your child with school hours and holiday
schedule. Talk to school personnel about what an average kindergarten day includes.
3 Participate in Kindergarten orientation and registration.
4 Gather the required forms needed for kindergarten registration.
5 Talk about the transition to kindergarten as a positive step in your child’s development. Parents that exhibit a positive attitude about kindergarten help lessen some of the anxiety their child will probably feel. Check out children’s books about kindergarten from your local library and read them at home.
